INFINITE BORDERS 10th Anniversary Summer Major Update: Eight Formations Season Preview (Part 1)

2025/08/15

Greetings, mighty Lords!

As one of the first seasons introduced in INFINITE BORDERS, "Eight Formations" featured a new map, the unique Fog mechanic, and diverse settings like naval battles and the four seasons, leaving a deep impression on Lords.

Although the original "Eight Formations" boldly included a lot of new gameplay, its shortcomings led to its temporary removal. In recent years, we have received numerous suggestions from Lords to remake "Eight Formations." This testifies that Zhuge Liang's ingenious Eight Formations in history and the mystical, legendary stone maze that trapped Lu Xun in fiction continue to captivate countless Three Kingdoms fans.

To once again offer Lords this mystical and tactical sandbox experience, an "Eight Formations" remake is set to launch. Now, let us take a glimpse at this revamped season.

The Esoteric Arts: Zhuge Liang's Eight Formations

"In heaven, it forms images; on earth, it takes shape. Thus, change and transformation are seen."

—The Book of Changes: Great Commentary I

The "Eight Formations" season introduces a new map, with eight Army-raising States corresponding to Zhuge Liang's Eight Formations: Sky as Cover, Earth as Base, Soaring Wind, Hanging Clouds, Flying Dragon, Tiger Wings, Flying Bird, and Coiling Snake. The 64 Counties across these States are named after the 64 hexagrams in The Book of Changes. Within the Army-raising States, there are four Resource States aligned with the Four Symbols: Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise, with Counties named after the 28 mansions. At the very center lies a standalone Resource State: Central Palace, housing the three Counties of Taiji, Yin, and Yang.

After the release of the "Eight Formations" remake, the Army-raising States on the map are no longer interconnected. Through Passes, every two Army-raising States can connect to the same Resource State via Passes, while Resource States can link to Central Palace. Additionally, special buildings—the Eight Gates—can be found on the map, featuring a unique connection mechanism that allows direct access from Army-raising States to the inner Central Palace. Central Palace is shrouded in fog and conceals the mysterious power of Yin-Yang rotation. The new map and mechanisms await Lords to explore.

During the season, each Army-raising State corresponds to a Faction. By selecting any Army-raising State, Lords will join the corresponding Faction. At the end of the season, season rewards will be tallied based on Faction.

Use Formations to Overpower the Enemy

"Forming ranks before engaging in battle is the norm in military strategy. However, the essence of mastery lies in the ingenuity of the commander."

—Biography 124: Yue Fei from History of Song

In ancient warfare, formations were used to adjust the deployment of troops in specific areas, maximizing the army's advantage while compensating for its weaknesses. The goal was to achieve maximum combat effectiveness. Formations were not only conventional tactics, but also a demonstration of the commander's wisdom and tactical acumen.

The revamp of the "Eight Formations" season will include the new Formation gameplay. Different formations and formation effects for Heroes will diversify troop compositions, opening up even more possibilities on the battlefield.

   Free City Expansion

To enrich city management and allow Lords to expand their Force more flexibly, the "Eight Formations" season will introduce free building construction on Territory adjacent to Cities:

Lords can construct special buildings such as Viewing Platform, Warehouses, Reservists Camps, Banking Houses, Mechanic Labs, Towers, and Taverns on Territory adjacent to Cities within the Supply Range of the Main City or Subcities. Once built, these structures will become part of the City. Each building has its Land Level requirement and special effects, allowing Lords to freely create a unique City based on their needs.

Rise to the Top and Achieve Glory

To honor the courage and wisdom of Lords who venture into the Eight Formations, Lords can gain War Merit, occupy Cities, or increase Force Value to earn Merit and promote to a higher Peerage rank, which grants more daily Aristocratic Stipends and supplies.

At the end of the season, Lords' Merit and Peerage will affect their tally rewards.

INFINITE BORDERS has always been committed to providing Lords with a richer experience in ancient wartime management and warfare. "With his exploits history is crowned; For his Eight Formations he's renowned." How will Lords write their own saga in the mystical world of the Eight Formations? Stay tuned to find out!
