Jia Xu, aware that he was not one of Cao Cao's old confidants yet possessed profound strategic insight, feared arousing suspicion. Thus, he kept to himself, refrained from private socializing, and ensured his family's marriages did not involve alliances with powerful clans. As a result, those who discussed wisdom and strategy in the realm regarded him as the foremost authority.

Jia Xu, styled Wenhe, was a native of Guzang in Wuwei. During the Late Han Dynasty, he was selected as a Filial and Incorrupt candidate and appointed as a Gentleman of the Palace. When Dong Zhuo entered Luoyang, Jia Xu served as a Commandant of Pingjin under the Grand Commandant's office and was later promoted to Colonel Who Subdues Rebels. After Dong Zhuo's downfall, he persuaded Dong Zhuo's generals to attack Chang'an to the west, leading to the chaos caused by Li Jue and Guo Si. He was appointed as a Secretary and oversaw official selections. When Li Jue and Guo Si fought each other in Chang'an, Jia Xu served as General Who Spreads Righteousness and provided significant support to the Han Imperial Court. When Emperor Xian returned east, Jia Xu left Li Jue and joined General Duan Wei. Sensing Duan Wei's suspicion and jealousy, he then went to Nanyang to join Zhang Xiu, twice devising strategies to defeat Cao Cao. During the Battle of Guandu, he persuaded Zhang Xiu to submit to Cao Cao. He was appointed as Bearer of the Golden Mace, enfeoffed as Neighborhood Marquis of Duting, promoted to Governor of Jizhou, and remained to participate in military affairs under the Minister of Works. Subsequently, he assisted in defeating Yuan Shao, Han Sui, Ma Chao, and others, frequently contributing strategic plans. He also helped Cao Pi secure his position as Crown Prince. When Emperor Wen of Wei ascended the throne, he elevated Jia Xu to Grand Commandant and enfeoffed him as Communal Marquis of Weishou. In the 4th year of the Huangchu era, he passed away peacefully at an advanced age and was posthumously honored as "The Solemn."
