　Dong Zhuo, courtesy name Zhongying, was from Lintao, Longxi. Known for his bravery and valor, he roamed among the Qiang people when he was young, forming ties with various leaders. Initially serving as a local official and patrolling the frontier, he was feared by the Qiang and Hu. At the end of Emperor Huan's reign, he was selected from the noble families of six counties to be a Feathered Forest Guard. As a military aide-de-camp, he followed General Zhang Huan in a successful campaign in Bingzhou, and was appointed as an official. He successively served as the County Magistrate of Guangwu, Commandant of the Northern Part of Shu Commandery, Colonel of the Western Regions, Inspector of Bingzhou, Governor of Hedong, etc. In the first year of Zhongping of Emperor Ling's reign, he was appointed as Eastern Colonel General, replacing Lu Zhi to fight against the Yellow Turban in Xiaquyang, but the army was defeated and he was held accountable. Soon after, he rose again, performing meritorious service in the crusade against the rebel army in Xiliang, given the title "General of the Vanguard", and ennobled as Communal Marquis of Li. At the end of Emperor Ling's reign, he was summoned to be Shaofu but did not take up the post, and was then appointed as the Governor of Bingzhou. Upon Emperor Ling's death, He Jin plotted to eliminate the eunuchs and summoned Dong Zhuo to lead troops into Luoyang. After entering the capital, Dong Zhuo deposed Emperor Shao, enthroned Emperor Xian, murdered the nobility, and dominated the court with military power. The eastern vassals raised an army for a crusade. Dong Zhuo burned down Luoyang, took Emperor Xian hostage, and relocated the capital further west to Chang'an, appointing himself Grand Preceptor, and his tyranny worsened.
