In this article, we will introduce how to upgrade Heroes fast (how to gain EXP) in INFINITE BORDERS. This article also lists ways to use Zhu Jun and Cao Chun, as well as City Areas, to gain EXP. If you're interested in learning about how to raise Hero Level fast, it's highly recommended to read this article.
Next, let's discuss efficient methods for upgrading Heroes!
Players of INFINITE BORDERS may find themselves struggling with upgrading their Heroes, especially at the early stages of the game, where forcefully upgrading Heroes can deplete resources quickly. Many players have likely encountered situations where a lack of resources halted their progress.
A general rule during upgrading is to avoid causing Strength losses (this is to reduce resource consumption). The methods described below are relatively resource-efficient and can be used to gain EXP effectively.
Use the Preemptive Effect to gain EXP
This is recommended at the beginning of a season. While not usually used by beginners just starting out, it's a good way to upgrade your main Heroes later. When resources are scarce early game, this method allows efficient upgrading without Drafting, providing over 100 EXP.
Key points to gaining EXP with the Preemptive Effect
Include the Hero you want to upgrade in a lineup with the Preemptive Effect. Place only 2 Heroes in the lineup.
Don't Draft but instead March towards Lv.5 Land Tiles
Launch the Preemptive Effect, attacking the enemy before they can act
Although you will lose the battle, you will gain EXP.
Use Zhu Jun to gain EXP
Zhu Jun's Stratagem "Guandong Authority" Effect
For the first two turns of battle, your troop group gains the Preemptive status each turn. During this period, the enemy group will be in the Shaken status and lose some Strength each turn (DMG Rate: 60%). The damage dealt by the Shaken status cannot be evaded.
This method utilizes the Preemptive status of Zhu Jun's Stratagem "Guandong Authority" for efficient upgrading at the initial stage of the game. You can prepare multiple Zhu Juns and deploy them in turn when they are seriously injured to improve efficiency.
Using Zhu Jun for upgrading is a recommended method, especially in S2 where you can only form a 2-person troop initially. Once the Commander Hall is constructed, this method can be used to train the third Hero in your starting troop.
Gain over 100 EXP even without Draft
Combining Troop Dividing Stratagems and Pursuit Stratagems grants more EXP
When Zhu Jun is capable of equipping Stratagems, you can equip him with Troop Dividing and Pursuit Stratagems to increase the damage and EXP gained from battles.

Use Cao Chun + Pioneer Assault to gain EXP
Effect of Cao Chun's Stratagem "Tiger Supervisor" |
In the first turn after the battle starts, increases your troop group's Attack damage by 20.0% (affected by ATK). This effect decreases by 1/4 per turn. |
Effect of Stratagem "Pioneer Assault" |
In the first 2 turns of battle, gains the Preemptive status. Can launch 2 Basic Attacks per turn. ATK increased by 15.0%. |
This method combines Pioneer Assault, allowing a Combo Strike within the first 2 turns of battle, with Cao Chun, who gains the strongest buff at the start of battle. This method is particularly effective for physical damage dealers and is even more powerful when used on Advanced Heroes, as you can allocate Points to ATK.
A great combination of Stratagems grants a large amount of EXP
Use City Areas to gain EXP
When you are able to occupy Lv.6 Land Tiles with a single troop, it is recommended to use the City Area for upgrading Heroes. Compared to Land Tiles of the same level, Garrisons in City Areas are relatively weak, and your troops' Morale doesn't drop after battles, making it a safe place for upgrading your Heroes.
How to Use City Areas to Gain EXP
- Construct Fortresses around NPC Cities
- Occupy as many Land Tiles as possible until you can't continue occupying more
- Attack a City Area, wait for the Garrison to recover, and then attack again
While it's not mandatory to occupy a sufficient number of Land Tiles before you start farming EXP, please note that occupying Land Tiles incurs a 1-hour Truce and a 30-minute abandonment time, significantly reducing upgrading efficiency. Additionally, the number of City Areas is limited, so for the sake of efficiency, it's best to start upgrading when you can no longer occupy Land Tiles.
Do not force it if you experience excessive Strength losses
Using City Areas to gain EXP can effectively boost your Heroes' level, but when there are Strength losses, your efficiency will instead decrease.
Below is a simple list of City Area Levels and the recommended Hero Levels. If there are many draws or significant Strength losses, you may consider attacking lower-level City Areas or upgrading on Lv.5 Land Tiles.
City Area Level |
Recommended Level for Your Heroes |
Lv.3 City Area |
– Lv.35 Hero |
Lv.4 City Area |
– Lv.40 Hero |
Lv.5 City Area |
– Lv.45 Hero |
Lv.6 City Area |
– Lv.50 Hero |
Drill on high-level Land Tiles
If you want to raise Hero Level, you can Drill on higher-level Land Tiles (preferably Lv.6 or above). Each Drill consumes 3 Decrees and 20 Hero Stamina. Decrees are often used for Reclamation early game, so it's recommended to Drill later in the game.
Furthermore, EXP gained from Drills is evenly distributed among your troop. If you have a specific Hero you want to focus on, it's best to set up a solo lineup with them and then Drill to ensure they receive the maximum EXP.
